Cucumber Growing:- The chief needs of the Cucumber are light, heat, moisture and a rich growing medium. The ideal structure we have found for growing the perfect Cucumber Plant, at the present time, is a evenhandedly low poly-tunnel or Spanish tunnel. The high humidity in these structures is very beneficial to the young Cucumbers as they are developing. Most hybrid Cucumbers are self-pollinating, this means that the aid of insects is not required. The tunnels can be kept shut and only ventilated when the temperature starts to rise in mid-summer. Cucumbers succeed ideal when the growing medium in which they are planted is put on a foundation of good organic vegetable compost. More information on organic compost and the creating of compost can be found on our blog.

@TheSwordmanx Unless it is some sort of hybrid. You never know which characteristics they will take on, and many will not even set fruit. When you buy hybrids they are always F-1 generation. If you wish to save money, it would be best to buy heirloom, then the seeds are much more reliable. I tend to buy hybrids for their disease resistance though…humid summers + clay soil makes for a bad combo.

OH MY GOD THOSE ARE HUGE!!!! Beautiful plant. I have a small garden, but I planted mine near a [chainlink] fence and accidentally got a bush variety instead of the vining type, I didn’t realize there would be that much a difference lol (first time growing them). It produced only a few cukes and then died off. This yr I will definitely take advantage of the space I have. Same with my beans. Do you think pole beans will be too big for a 4′ tall fence? Or should I start with a bush variety first?

@xxnoangelxx Also, the sooner you pick them, the more the plant will want to produce. Leave them on, and growth will slow down. Same for other fruits of the same family… squash, pumpkins, etc.

thanks, I find if you pick them to late and they turn yellow they taste bitter.

@joyville2 Yes you can save seeds from the plants you grew because seeds in those offspring will be 2nd generation plants which are genetically adapted and will more likely to grow in the environment you live in. The seeds you get from a fruit or vegetable in grocery store are less likely to grow and therfore you won’t be as successful comparing to buying seeds in a pouch from your neaby plant nurseries such as Home Depot or OSH or LOWE’S. Spring is 2 months away, start planting indoors NOW.

    GODDAMN THATS HUGE

  14. cooleb says:

to have mature seeds, you need to let the cucumber on the plant until the color turns yellowish. This mean the seeds are mature enough

I’m a new gardener. Can I save the seeds from plants I grow or can I save seeds from a type of cucumber I like that I buy at the grocery store? If I do that, how do I do it?
