it’s obvious you’re not a compost expert, because the core is in the middle not at the end, where you’re inserting the thermometer.

AAArrrrggggg! I have tried for days to get this dang video to load…

All to NO avail! It just gives me that little “swirly-dot” thing there in the middle!

Anybody else havin’ this problem or is it just me??

I bet I could chill a 6 pack in the middle of my compost pile. No heat at all and seriously it is cooler than the outside air. I think it is moist enough but I suspect not enough mass.

@Watsamadoing Just realised i could still use it in fahrenheit…

Hmm, i can’t find anyone in Australia that sells these for less than $60… Not the same sort as you have. I can buy one like yours and have it shipped over here for less than that.. Just not sure if you can get them in celcius… Went to one of our largest hardware/gardening businesses and they had never heard of one…

I love Chico and let John be free. If he visits your compost pile it’s like the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus. Just let him be, leave some dehydrated fruit out for him, some sugar snap peas for his little rein deer and we can make a new holiday.

    Hey John:
When you come to San Diego we will teach you and your viewers everything you need to know about composting. We make our own soil for over 1,000,000. plants a year. Here is a little secret, use items high in carbs as it makes a great fuel for your pile.

They came to my place too to get him off my “Pile”. The didnt put him in cuffs though, they used a Chinese Green Thumb Trap…. I will definately have to get a thermo for my piles.

@Praxxus55712: Wow. I didn’t know John was that playful. I know he’s crazy about compost. He’s always talking about them. John is a cool guy. But you’re cooler. You got the turkeys and peacocks! That’s so cool.

A compost pile does not take five years to break down! More like six weeks. And do not block the Air flow! Oxygen is necessary for the micro organisms to live! Your pile should be oxygen rich, and fairly moist. If you have questions Praxxus55712 has excellent vids on compost and compost tea. Stick with that and your set!

If anyone sees Jon bouncing on their compost pile, call the cops. He does that alot. He’ll just show up & start bouncing on their compost. He was doing that to mine & I was like “NO Jon…..NO! Stop it Jon”. He got mad & beat me up with a carrot. :(

ps Jon, if you want to kick that compost into high gear, wet it throughout, pile it higher & it’ll start cooking pronto. Within a week you’ll have it up to full cooking mode. Weeds can go into a compost pile as long as they don’t have seeds.

  16. mysciencenow says:

i would block the air flow that would increase heat

  17. crewlla says:

our compost piles take a long long time to compost. It takes about five years to work its way down to dirt. it sucks but every year we will make a new compost so in five years we will have compost for every year. hope we dont move soon.

    John,
I didn’t have a very active compost pile until I started having my parents save thier coffee grounds for me. Those coffee grounds have made my compost pile the bin of goodness it is today! lol
Go to Starbucks or some other coffee place and ask them for their old coffee grounds!
