I need something evenhandedly simple, and simple to understand. I’m wanting to build a small veggie/herb window garden. Something that might have enough produce to can for winter supplies. Also, what are some good veggies/herbs to plant that could sustain a mortal in case of an emergency (winter storm, economical meltdown… you know, the usual business). Also, what are good supplies to have on hand that can be reusable in an extended emergency.
Thank you for reading all this, and any help you can give me.
It really does not matter what you grow it is being able to keep it for an extended period of time. You need to learn how to can your own food if you want long lasting effects. Anything first aid is good to have. Plastic water storage, can food, etc. You can go to any army surplus store and they have it all!
Most Herbs can be stored once dry, but won’t supply enough nutrition to support you if that is all you have. The same with most veggies.
Do a search for army / navy surplus stores in your area and see if they have any rations packs for sale. The packs can be stored for a long time and have enough nutrition value to make for good meals.
A lot of people in the mid west keep rations loaded in their storm shelters for just emergency you are talking about.
Also check on ebay for anyone listing these, some people sell a master emergency package to updating shelter stocks.
If you just want to dry some herbs try this: Preheat the oven to around 170 degrees Fahrenheit and place them on a flat surface, a non-stick cookie sheet works well and bake for 2 to 4 hours.
Then store them in glass containers.
You can get a lot more tips and herb growing information from the source I used.
