I just put one of these filters in there, make sure the lining isn’t keeping the lid from shutting tight and everything works out. Now after a week or more I do begin to notice, “Oh hey rotting food scraps are in my kitchen”. So at that point I tell the wife to go dig a spot in the compost and empty the sucker out, just like taking out the garbage.
I recommend this product for use in containing compost smells in your compost pail. I do not recommend it as a loofah.

Was unable to find these in any store. Don’t know why. Really work well to block the smell in a small apartment. Only complaint is when the mold begins to grow on them.

I would NOT countertop-compost without these filters Compost Pail Filters . Mind you, for those who don’t know, countertop composting is a 3-6 day project depending on your food combination. It’s good for giving the food time to break down a bit before vermicomposting or before adding it to an outdoor traditional compost heap — but you don’t want to try and complete the composting process (creating a rich additive for your garden or soil) on your kitchen countertop. It would stink to high-heaven with the filters or not! These filters combined with a cool ceramic or metal container Norpro Red Ceramic Compost Keeper work great for that initial composting process.
